Hopi Food

The Hopi were very good farmers. They grew plants like beans, corn squash, cotton, onions, peas, carrots, melions, and turkeys. The men hunted antelope and deer for meat. The women also gathered food too. They gathered fruits, nuts, and herbs. The Hopi had favorite foods. Some of the favorite foods were baked beans, soups, and types of cornbread. The Hopi grew 24 different kinds of corn. Some corn are blue and white.

Hopi Region

Reservations are in northern Arizona. Hopi are from the South West desert. Hopi used to live in the Black Mesa area. They lived in the plateau which is about 1,000 feet high. On top of the plateau is grass lands which they live near. They have been living in villages since 1100 A.D.

Hopi Tribe Today

Today, they live in the north eastern part of Arizona. They live in apartments and modern houses. Others still live in traditional housing. They live in more modern lives. Their annual budget is about 28 million, with a federal budget. They still live on mesas. Navajo is a reservation the Hopi live today. They are teaching children english and the Hopi language. 5,000 indians live in Arizona. They blend in by being themselves. They live on and near the black mesa and still live on mesas about 1,000 feet high.

Hopi Housing and Beliefs

The Hopi live in adobe houses made of clay. Adobe is straw baked clay. Hopi live in adobe villages. They do the snake dance and have traditional dances. The snake dance is when the Hopi hold snakes in their teeth and then let the snakes go. They hold traditional powwows and potlatches.
